Irish Internet Show Call for Speakers

The sponsors of the Internet Show, Ireland's largest business and consumer Internet exhibition, are currently looking for speakers with publishable papers. If you're interested in speaking at the conference, send a 500-word synopsis of your proposed talk, along with a short biography. The closing date for entries is Monday, September 15, 1997.

More Positive Press on Mac OS 8

  • Computer Currents--Computer Currents columnist and long-time Macintosh author John Rizzo called Mac OS 8 "a hands-down winner." In his Creative Mac column, Rizzo said, "The new features actually make using a Mac quicker and easier. And the software is rock solid. Overall, Mac OS 8 is an invigorating kick for Mac users." The second part of this article takes a look at Mac OS 8's extensive and innovative Internet features. It's currently posted at the following address, along with a link to Part I of the article:

  • New Media Magazine--Becky Waring, executive editor at New Media Magazine, had some enthusiastic comments about Mac OS 8 in her Brainstorm column. In this article, she wrote, "...OS 8 will quicken the hearts of the Mac faithful and cause some PC jaws to drop."

    An Interview With the Lead Mac OS 8 Engineer

    Integrating 759 software components into Mac OS 8 involved more decisions than a pretzel has salt. In a recent interview, lead engineer C.K. Haun tells how the engineering team tackled more than 150 possibilities a day to select the 759 best features for Mac OS 8. The interview is posted at this web site:

    Apple Takes Back Mac OS Market Share From Other Vendors

    During the second fiscal quarter of 1997, Apple won back some of the market share lost to third-party Mac OS-based computer manufacturers. According to Dataquest, the company's share of the Mac OS market increased to more than 80 percent, a 12 percent gain from the first quarter.     Apple Is Working to Expand Its Asian Market

    Developers interested in Apple's Asian market may want to read the Reuters article "Apple Looks to Asia to Boost Sales," posted on CNET on August 14. In this article, Steve Vamos, vice president and managing director of Apple Asia Pacific, is quoted as saying:

  • Apple has refocused its Asian investments away from pure manufacturing, moving to an organization that includes a stronger sales and support team.

  • Apple's Asian revenues grew 12 percent in its fiscal third quarter, which ended June 1997, compared to the previous quarter.

  • Revenues in China, derived primarily from Apple's publishing business, rose 40 percent in its third fiscal quarter over the previous year.

    Mitch Mandich Appointed as Senior Vice President of Apple Americas

    Apple just announced that Mitch Mandich has been named senior vice president of Apple Americas. In this position, he'll be responsible for sales activities for all markets in the United States, Canada, and Latin America. Mandich was previously vice president of the North America Business Division. Prior to joining Apple in February, he was vice president of worldwide sales and services at NeXT Software, where he developed and led the strategy for Internet and client/server sales to enterprise customers. Mandich has more than 15 years of experience in the client/server industry, having held previous positions with Pyramid Technology, Tandem, and Unisys.

    Customer Advisory Board Provides Apple With Feedback

    Apple has announced the successful close of the first series of meetings with its Customer Advisory Boards (CAB). The attendees, representing some of the largest corporations in the United States, discussed Apple's products and strategic direction, then examined the impact of Apple's future technology on their business. Over a span of eight days in July, 42 members of the CAB met separately with three groups at Apple: Publishing, Entertainment, and New Media (PEN); Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET); and the Apple Enterprise Group.

    Apple plans to continue the meetings on a quarterly basis. Senior Market Development Manager Bahman Dara, the creator and manager of the Customer Advisory Boards, explained that "ultimately the goal is to ensure that our technologies are not only true innovations but also meet the real-world business needs of our customers."

    Business Seminars for Silicon Valley Developers

    The Center for Software Development (CSD) is a nonprofit organization that provides resources to software developers to help them successfully start and grow technology businesses. In the next few months, CSD is offering a variety of software business seminars at its Santa Clara site. Since Apple is a sponsor of CSD, Apple developers can attend any of these seminars free of charge. Developers can also use the center's testing facilities, which are often available on shorter notice than Apple's in-house compatibility labs. Here's a list of upcoming seminars:

    New Macintosh Web Site Debuts

    With the help of Macintosh loyalists across the country, a new independent Macintosh web site, called "Mac Requests," was unveiled on August 18. The mission of Mac Requests is to encourage the development of software for the Mac OS platform by bringing users with specific product needs together with developers who can create those products. Mac Requests takes requests from the Mac OS community and determines whether there is enough support to convince software developers to pursue it.
